7 Common Causes Of Ankle Pain

by Freddie Cox

The foot and ankle region of the human body is a highly complex mixture of bones, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and blood vessels that keep you balanced and make it possible for you to stand, walk, and run. More than 1/4 of the bones in your body are located in your foot and ankle region as well as over 100 ligaments, tendons, and muscles. It's no surprise that ankle pain can have many different causes. Following are seven of the most common.

Rupture of the Tibialis Tendon

Rupture of the tibialis tendon is characterized by sudden, sharp pain in the area of the inner ankle. This condition is often caused by athletic activity, although it can occur in those who are significantly overweight during the course of normal activity. Since the tibialis tendon helps to maintain the arch of the foot, this condition sometimes results in fallen arches. Initial symptoms include bruising, tenderness, stiffness of the arch, or swelling. A snapping sound may be heard at the time of injury.

Rupture of the Peroneal Tendon

Rupture of the peroneal tendon results in immediate loss of function, sudden, sharp pain, and substantial weakness. This condition is usually caused by participation in athletic events, and it is not uncommon for those who develop it to hear a snapping sound and to experience a tearing sensation as the injury is occurring. Bruising, tenderness, and swelling are are other common symptoms of this condition.

Dislocated Ankle

A dislocated ankle is a painful condition that is usually the result of experiencing blunt force trauma. Common causes for this condition include falling from a significant height or becoming involved in a motor vehicle accident. The ankle usually becomes extremely swollen and misshapen as a result, and one or more fractures may accompany the dislocation.

Pott's Fracture

This condition involves the splintering or complete breakage of one or more of the prominent bones found on the both sides of your ankle. This condition involves severe pain that may subside somewhat when you aren't putting weight on it. The affected region generally swells as a result and is tender and sore to the touch. This condition often accompanies a serious sprain.

Talus Fracture

Talus fractures involve the bone at the front of the ankle and are often occur when people fall in a forward direction because it results in significant bending of the talus bone. Swelling and pain at the front and sides of the ankle are common symptoms of this condition.

Sprained Ankle

This condition is one of the most common ankle injuries, and, like many other ankle injuries, is often the result of participation in sports. Sprained ankles occur when the outer ligaments of the ankle become torn, and damages range from mild to severe. Symptoms include swelling, tenderness, bruising, and pain. Mild sprains usually involve stiffness and a slight amount of pain, while the most serious sprains will make it impossible for you to walk. Keep in mind that less serious sprains can sometimes be made worse by continuing to walk on them.

Rolled Ankle

A rolled ankle is simply a sprained ankle in reverse -- the inner ligaments become torn rather than the outer ones. This is less common than a conventional sprained ankle, but the symptoms and treatment options are the same.

Ankle injuries usually involve the necessity of staying off your feet as much as possible while in order to promote fast and thorough healing. It's important to obtain proper medical treatment for an ankle injury -- neglecting to do so can result in improper healing that can cause long term problems. Erring on the side of caution and seeking medical attention is important.

Coping with Chronic Health Conditions: Tips

Ever since I was a young girl, I have had bad asthma and allergies. I had to stay in the hospital several times when I was in elementary school just to help get my asthma under control and it seemed like I was trying medication after medication with little success. I don't remember all of my childhood health details, since I was so young, but my mother has "filled in the blanks" for me. Thanks to modern medicine and a natural remedy, my health conditions are currently under control and have been for a few years now. I am very grateful for my good health, and I want to "pay it back" to others by creating a blog where I will post my health tips. I hope I can help you learn how to achieve good health!
