5 Ways An Athlete Can Recover From Surgery To Repair A Torn ACL

ACL injuries are something many athletes are familiar with, since it is not uncommon for this ligament to tear while playing sports. If you tear your ACL, you will need surgery to repair it properly. While surgery will take you off the field or court for a while, there are several things you can do to help ensure that your recovery goes smoothly. Use the following tips for a timely recovery from ACL surgery:

Get Plenty of Rest

In the days after surgery, it is important to get as much rest as possible so your body can begin to heal. It is a good idea to have a friend or family member available to help you, since you will need to stay in bed. While resting, you will probably be advised to keep your knee propped up and to use ice as needed to help reduce swelling.

Attend All Follow Up Appointments

It is absolutely essential that you attend all follow up appointments scheduled by your surgeon. Your surgeon will monitor your recover and make changes to your recovery plan as needed. In addition, your surgeon will be able to tell you when it is okay to resume your athletic training.

Go to Physical Therapy

Almost everyone who has ACL surgery is prescribed physical therapy during their recovery. Your surgeon will refer you to a physical therapist shortly after your surgery. It is very important that you go to every physical therapy session and put forth your full effort. The exercises you do in physical therapy will help you regain a full range of motion in your knee that was operated on.

Rehab at Home

Your physical therapist will most likely assign rehab sports thereapy physical therapy for you to do at home. Don't skip these exercises, as they can help strengthen your knee and restore stability. Being diligent about your rehab can go a long way towards your recovery so you can get back to playing your favorite sport.

Don't Push Yourself

As your knee begins to feel better, you may be tempted to engage in rigorous activities. This is not a good idea! Even if your knee feels better, it does not mean that it is completely healed. Never start exercising or playing a sport again without your surgeon's approval. Doing so can lead to a re-injury and you'll have to have surgery again to repair your knee. It is a much better idea to be patient and not push yourself during your recovery.
